Both Alexander and Iredell counties have a worthless-check program designed to deal with worthless checks in a more efficient manner. The program was first introduced by the General Assembly in 1997 as a pilot program for select North Carolina counties. Due to its success, it was converted to a permanent program in 1999 and has since been expanded to include 22 prosecutorial districts and 39 counties.
The program provides a quicker process for the collection of restitution for merchants than the traditional court process, and it saves law enforcement and court resources by alleviating the need to prosecute each worthless-check case.
The services of the program are free to the victims. Administrative costs are assessed to the passers of the worthless checks as provided by North Carolina General Statute 14-107.2. The program coordinator for Alexander and Iredell counties is Kelly DeHart. Citizens who wish to utilize the program should contact Ms. DeHart at 704-878-3262.
