Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Macon, Swain, Haywood, and Jackson Counties

The 30th Prosecutorial District includes seven counties, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain. The District is one of the largest prosecutorial districts in the state in terms of geography. The 1st District is the only other district in North Carolina with as many as seven counties. The 30th District is the only district in the state that borders three states; South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

The 2004 population of the district is estimated by the United States Census Bureau to be 178,620 people. Haywood County is the largest county with 56,256 people and Graham County is the smallest with 8,075 people. One Interstate Highway, I-40, runs through the district across Haywood County. Other major roads are US-23, US-74, US-64, US-441 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Great Smokies National Park is located within the district.

The lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are located in the district in Jackson, Swain, Graham and Cherokee Counties. Cherokee, North Carolina is the seat of government for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

For the most recent North Carolina Fiscal Year of 2004-2005 the 30th District had 2,669 felony filings in the Superior Courts and 4,241 total case filings in the Superior Courts. The nine Assistant District Attorneys of the 30th District are handling an average of 296.5 felony cases per ADA. The state-wide average per ADA is 221.7 felony cases. The 30th District is doing 34% more felony case work per ADA with 27% less personnel than the average of all districts in the State.

For FY 2004-2005 the total filings caseload is even more dramatic. The nine Assistant District Attorneys are handling an average of 471.2 Superior Court cases per ADA. The state-wide average per ADA is 311.5 superior Court cases. The 30th District is doing 51% more total Superior Court case work per ADA with 27% less personnel than the average of all districts in the State.

In FY 2004-2005 the 30th District had 59 felony jury trials and 100 jury trials for all cases in the Superior Court. The state-wide average for jury trials per district for FY 2004-2005 was 46.6 felony jury trials and 66.7 jury trials for all cases in the Superior Court.

Michael Bonfoey is currently and has been the District Attorney since April 21, 2003.

Charles Hipps was District Attorney from January 1, 1991 until his death on February 28, 2003.

Roy Patton was District Attorney from January 1, 1987 until December 31, 1990.
