Administrative Traffic Court is an informal Court without a Judge where ordinary citizens can come to handle minor traffic violations.  It was developed for working families with minor traffic violations so they can minimize their time from work and family.  A partnership with Surry Community College, Forsyth Tech and AAA provides a driving school for some drivers.  By disposing of these cases in Traffic Court, it allows Criminal District Court to spend its valuable time handling other more serious offenses.  The policies and procedures for Administrative Traffic Court are as follows:

YOU MUST APPEAR in administrative court on the dates set on your ticket unless you pay off the ticket.  You may ask for a reduction of the charge(s) if you have a good driving record only on your scheduled court date.

REDUCED SPEED REQUESTBring a copy of your driving record to court if you are going to ask for a speed reduction.  This can be obtained from the DMV office, for a fee of $8.00 made payable to NCDMV. BRING YOUR TICKET AND CASH:  It will save you a lot of time.

PLACE:  Surry County - Surry County Courthouse, 201 East Kapp Street, Dobson, NC.  The Clerk of Court will place a sign in the main lobby of the courthouse directing you to the courtroom in which Administrative Court is being held.

Stokes County – Stokes County Courthouse, Hwy 89, Danbury, NC. Line up outside the Clerk’s Office.

DATE:  ONLY on the date set on your ticket

TIME:  Anytime between 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon).  Sign in on the sign in sheet provided in the courtroom.  You will be called in the order listed on the sign in sheet.

ATTORNEYS:  This is an informal procedure.  However, you may appear with or without an attorney; or one can appear for you in your absence.

COURT COST/FINES:  CASH ONLY. NO PERSONAL CHECKS.  Bring at least $188.00 for court costs and a maximum of $100.00 for any potential fine and/or fee, for a total of $288.00.  If you do not have all the money, your case may be continued one time only.

CONTINUANCES:  If you cannot come to court, you may call the Clerk of Court to ask for a continuance.  However, some cases cannot be continued over the phone and you may be required to come to Administrative Court.

NO SHOWS:  If you do not show up, YOUR LICENSE MAY BE REVOKED AND YOU MAY ALSO OWE AN EXTRA $200.00 PENALTY.  An order for your arrest may be issued for certain offenses.

FOR EXPIRED DRIVER’S LICENSE, EXPIRED PLATES/INSPECTIONS:BRING A  CURRENT DRIVER’S LICENSE; RENEW YOUR LICENSE PLATES; GET YOUR VEHICLE INSPECTED  OR BRING PROOF IT HAS BEEN SOLD. BRING THIS PROOF TO COURT AND THESE CHARGES ARE NORMALLY DISMISSED.

NO INSURANCE:  We will dismiss “No Insurance"  tickets only if you had insurance in force on the day your ticket occurred.  BRING A LETTER FROM YOUR AGENT SHOWING FACT. A RECEIPT SHOWING YOU PAID FOR YOUR INSURANCE POLICY WILL NOT BE ENOUGH.
