Professional Development

The Conference provides dozens of informative training programs every year, ranging from fundamental trial skills development to specialized programs focusing on a particular criminal law area. Some of these training programs are designed exclusively for prosecutors, but many are open to law enforcement, legal assistants, court staff, and other allied professionals. The Conference gratefully acknowledges the grant funding that makes many of these trainings possible.

M is for Murder

  • July 31, 2024 – August 2, 2024

This three-day multidisciplinary course will provide the knowledge and skills necessary for prosecutors to make charging decisions and prosecute homicide cases. Additionally, the course will provide practical exercises in the investigation and prosecution of a homicide and teamwork tips for investigation and victim advocates.

Juvenile Court: Back to Basics

  • August 1, 2024 – August 2, 2024

This one and 1/2 day course is designed for individuals who want to learn the basics of juveniles court or those who are already experienced in juvenile court prosecution and need a refresher. On the first day, classroom instruction will cover topics such as juvenile procedure, and an update on statutory and case law. The second day will consist of a tour of the Cabarrus Youth Development Center, which aims to educate participants on what happens from the start to the end of a YDC Commitment and dispel common myths and misunderstandings.

What You Do Matters- August 2024

  • August 14, 2024

This program examines policing within the legal and political framework of Nazi Germany- a journey that eventually turned those who should protect life and liberty into those who intimidates, humiliated, deported, and eventually murdered millions of innocent people. Using historical images and stories from the Holocaust, this course engages law enforcement and prosecutors in a dialogue about the role of law enforcement in today’s communities and the importance of core values in ensuring the integrity and vibrancy of democracy

Sexual Assault: Presenting Your Case to A Jury

  • August 22, 2024 – August 23, 2024

This two-day practical skills training is designed for prosecutors and law enforcement teams. Building and putting the best case before a jury requires early and constant cooperation. We will address partnership, first-response best practices, critical evidence, early “issue spotting” educating the jury, and the admissibility and strategic use of evidence at trial.

Practice Makes Perfect- September 2024

  • September 12, 2024 – September 13, 2024

Court can be intimidating, but not if you are prepared. This two-day course is all about practice. After each lecture, we will break out into small groups, and practice what we discussed: everything from testifying about SFST’s to breath testing.
