Your District Attorney

Mike Bonfoey received his Juris Doctorate law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1976 after receiving his undergraduate B.A. in History from UNC in 1972.

After obtaining his law degree, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in the 4th District and then in the 30th District until 1981 when he entered the private practice of law in Waynesville, North Carolina. During his time in the private practice of law he served for many years as the Town Attorney for Waynesville.

Mike Bonfoey has served as the District Attorney for Prosecutorial District 30 since April 2003. He has been elected and served as the President of the Haywood County Bar Association, along with the President of the 30th District Bar. He also served two terms on the Disciplinary Hearing Commission of The North Carolina State Bar.

Mike is married to Kelley Bonfoey who also graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Since obtaining her law degree, Kelley has worked as an attorney with the Legal Aid Office of North Carolina in Sylva. She is currently a Senior Staff Attorney with Legal Aid. 

Mike has one daughter, Tekla, who is a probation officer in Guilford County. He has a step-daughter, Lauren, who is currently a student at Tuscola High School. Mike, Kelley, and Lauren make their home on Lake Junaluska, North Carolina.
